Final Report on A Webinar Course on Disaster Journalism
As the need for sensitizing media students on Disaster Journalism and Crisis Communication (especially in the context of Covid-19 pandemics-induced difficulties in Nepal) was realized, the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Kantipur City College (KCC) conducted a webinar course in collaboration with Talbot Campus, Bournemouth University, England from 29 April till 1 May 2020. A total of 45 students and former graduates participated in the course, most of them being directly into mainstream journalism.
Pandemic and health-related media products that are comprehensible and useful to people in general are required in larger scale than ever before, but the working journalists in Nepal were seen to only seldom focus on what actually is required. The need for empirical, science-backed background-knowledge of health issues was highly realized.
In this backdrop, the webinar course on Disaster Journalism was conducted as a timely step to sensitize them about the theme and motivate them to produce media products which could be very useful in times of public health crisis.
Kantipur City College organized a one day webinar on Dissertation Writing
Kantipur City College organized a one day webinar on Dissertation Writing. The webinar was for Master students who are writing their thesis and didn’t know what to expect or how to manage the project towards completion.
Writing a Dissertation is very different from following a course and taking an exam. You can’t just start writing and simply add citations, references and theories. There are many tasks that need to be addressed before you can even start with the introduction.
The following questions were addressed in the webinar.
How to do a literature Review ?
What are the contemporary topics for the research ?
What are the steps of writing the proposal ?
How can data be collected and analyzed ?
Prof. Dr Subarna Shakya discussed regarding proposal writing. He demonstrates some real examples of proposals. He clarified all the steps to be taken while writing a proposal.
Prof. Dr. Manish Pokharel suggested students to select a topic which helps for nation development. He also listed some possible domains for research. Especially he focused on Tourism, Agriculture and health.
Associate Professor Dr. Gajendra Sharma focused on the importance of literature review while writing the thesis. He also explained the process of doing literature review in a scientific way.
Mr. Ganesh Sharma described data collection and analysis techniques in brief. He focused on the different types and methods for collecting data. He also explained how to present the collected data in a dissertation.
The webinar was specially focused MCA 2018 and 2017 batch students. KCC faculties, Students of MAMCJ and Supervisors also participated in the webinar.
From Department of MCA:
These all are the supporting documents/materials for the students who are willing to accomplish their dissertation. The students should be self directed:
“Writing a dissertation is a lot like writing a book. It is, by definition, a self-directed process. There are usually no weekly deadlines from supervisors , no regular discussions with classmates, no reading assignments, no one telling you what to do; you are on your own, writing something longer than you’ve ever written. This independence can make the process seem very intimidating. If you focus on all the procedures given by the Professors on this webinar and start your tasks on your own; it seems becomes very easy to accomplish the dissertation”
Thank you.
